When you visit the Oregon Coast take time to explore the many pocket
communities in the area. Each area is unique and offers a different spin
on your coastal experience.
Pacific City: North of Neskowin off the beaten track so you need to know
that it is there. Pacific City is a very casual, sandy beach town, home
to miles of walking beach, Cape Kiwanda, Pelican Pub Brewery, wonderful
shops and restaurants and the Dory fleet (a specific kind of fishing
boat launched right from the beach).
Neskowin: I dub it the Marthas Vineyard of the Oregon
Coast...down-to-earth exclusive. Fabulous surroundings, charming village
and magnificent views. The cottages in the village are the epitome of
what beach cottages should be!
Lincoln City: A tourist mecca with a population of 6000 jumping to
35,000 on a busy summer week-end. Lots of sandy beach, restaurants,
shops, galleries and activity. One of the best kept secrets to those
just passing through is Devils Lake. Devils Lake is a large fresh
water lake right in the heart of town connected to the Pacific Ocean by
the worlds smallest river. Having its own micro climate, the lake
offers all ranges of boating activity, while usually being warmer and
more sunny than the beach just blocks away! Check it out!
Gleneden Beach: South of Lincoln City, most famous for being the
location of Salishan (See about Salishan) and wonderful scenic beaches.
Depoe Bay: Reminds me of a small east coast fishing community, hosting
the worlds smallest harbor. Nowadays, along with the fishing boats,
there are numerous whale watching charters that come and go from this
harbor. Mostly situated on Basalt Rock this area offers dramatic,
powerful ocean activity including the famous Spouting Horn, park right
along Hwy 101 and see for yourself...you might just get wet!
Newport: Larger than Lincoln City and the location of the county
government offices. Newport is also home to the fabulous Oregon Coast
Aquarium and the active Bay Front where something fishy is always going
on. Definitely worth the trip!
Waldport: Just south of Newport, Waldport is a charming, quiet coastal
community at the mouth of the Alsea river, aka the Salmon Fishing
Capital of the World. The Alsea Bay is famous for its
abundant Dungeness Crab.
Yachats: The Gem of the Oregon Coast A somewhat secluded village
atmosphere makes Yachats an ideal get-a-way location. Close to beautiful
Cape Perpetua and the Sea Lion Caves.
